Greater Washington DC Chapter of ARMA Takes Leadership Role: $10,000 contributed to ARMA International Educational Foundation for the Rita Holt Educational Scholarship, Research Projects, and Memorials.

Washington, DC - October, 2011 - The Board of Directors of the Greater Washington DC (GWDC) Chapter of ARMA (Association of Records Managers and Administrators) approved an extraordinary contribution of $10,000 to the ARMA International Educational Foundation (AIEF), stating that “GWDC is proud to invest in the records and information management (RIM) profession.”

With this donation, GWDC established the Rita Holt Educational Scholarship, in honor of Rita Holt, a long-time, highly regarded legal records manager in the Chapter. GWDC also committed funding for a new research project – An International English-Language Directory of RIM Courses and for two years of updates to the Virginia Jones’ A Guide to Commonly Used National and International Records and Information Standards and Best Practices.

In addition, GWDC made donations in memory of past GWDC members, including: Alice Gannon, Tom Meier and Rita Holt.

As Host Chapter for the 2011 ARMA Annual Conference, GWDC also provided funding to purchase an iPad as an AIEF raffle prize.

The GWDC Directors noted that as a large and successful chapter, GWDC should take a leadership role and hoped that this contribution would serve as a challenge and encourage other ARMA Chapters to help fund scholarships, research, and the international education efforts of AIEF.

A Perspective on our Chapter’s Contribution to the ARMA International Educational Foundation (AIEF):

Right now, be proud. Be proud as the GWDC ARMA Chapter, a GWDC Chapter member, and a member of ARMA International. Here’s why:

  • Our chapter leadership took a serious look at the Chapter’s current financial stability and determined that to best serve the chapter membership, our practitioner peers and the field of records management; the Chapter should invest in the educational activities of the AIEF. The Chapter did that on your behalf with a total gift of $10,000.
  • But why are you included? Because some of your chapter dues, your meeting and seminar attendance registrations, your volunteer time and efforts helped the chapter to be fiscally sound over the years. A great debt of thanks related to ‘volunteerism’ goes to our Chapter leadership; they have watched the dollars spent and planned great quality meeting and seminar programs for below market costs. Feel free to not only share in the Chapter’s joy of giving back to the profession, but also in its investment in the future of records and information management.
  • A portion of the money has gone to set up a Rita Holt Educational Scholarship. While the criteria has yet to be developed, the long term goal here is to facilitate competent records and information management professionals who will in turn give back to the profession through teaching and mentoring in the records and information community.
  • Funds will be directed to establishing An International English Language Directory of RIM Courses as an AIEF research project. This completion of this initial project will enable anyone to see where RIM courses in English are being provided in the world. This reference tool will facilitate the ability of practitioners to further their knowledge, skills, abilities and credentials, and attract new recruits to a career in RIM. Once the initial project is complete, it will need regular funds for updating and maintenance.
  • Some of the Chapter’s donation is doing just that; providing for 2 years of updates to: A Guide to Commonly Used National and International Records and Information Standards and Best Practices.
  • Money donated for an iPad as an AIEF raffle prize will raise money for Foundation administration costs. As the Foundation grows, so do its expenses.
  • Some of the contribution, last but by no means least, has been directed to memorials that the Chapter established for Alice Gannon, Tom Meier and Rita Holt. If you aren’t aware, you can make individual contributions to these memorials at any time. It’s a great way to make one time gifts which go directly into the AIEF endowment. In order for the Foundation to grow programs, building the endowment is critical. As a bonus, you get a tax deduction.
  • Hopefully, the GWDC Chapter’s contribution to the AIEF challenges other ARMA chapters and regions, and ARMA individual member contributors as well as other related information professionals, associations and supporting vendors to take up the charge to build the AIEF. Build the future of records and information management! Be proud that our Chapter is first, but encourage other bigger gifts! Remember, you will benefit, too.
